Most days the kids skip naptime, leaving us a lot of free-time to play and build and create. This was our first year making salt dough ornaments and I would without question make them again.
The kids helped from start to finish. They mixed the ingredients, rolled and used their favorite cookie cutter shape. After letting the ornaments dry we took turns with the stamps and string.
Supplies
(recipe adapted fromthe cheese thief)
1 cup salt
2 cups flour
1 cup warm water
parchment paper
a straw
cookie cutters or a glass cup
stamps and ink (I used Martha Stewart Christmas stamps)
string
Mix the top three ingredients and roll onto parchment paper. Cut with cookie cutters and create hole for string with a straw. I read that baking the ornaments can puff up the design, so I let them air dry for several days.
It was a fun, easy project the kids and I completed together. And I loved seeing their joy in hanging their ornaments on the tree.
update // we've had these a few years now and I love hanging them every Christmas! They are fragile and should be wrapped carefully when storing for the season.
