This year I designed our Christmas tree to have a coastal theme. The ocean is one of my favorite places! Our whole family enjoys the beach and I look forward to our yearly visits. This year we visited Holden Beach with close friends: we spent the week swimming, grilling out, kayaking, and fishing. It was glorious and a much needed break from 2020. While at the beach we collected oyster shells. Turning our shells into ornaments inspired our coastal Christmas tree.

My style at home is comfortable modern with vintage accents. And I wanted to reflect that in our flocked Christmas tree, so I decorated with vintage Christmas decorations, green ball ornaments, and black and white plaid scarves. The wrapped scarves give the tree a cozy, comfortable, imperfect look I love. I was inspired to use green ornaments from the antique green train on our fireplace. It gave our neutral tree much needed color and a pop of cheer.

Every year I make a new set of homemade ornaments. Salt dough ornaments are easier to make than cookies (they don’t have to taste good at the end, ha!) and this year I added a few new ingredients to the salt dough recipe I’ve made in the past.
We were snowed in over the weekend and I found all of these ingredients in my pantry. I added cinnamon & maple ginger tea to the salt dough recipe and the ornaments have the most amazing smell!
