Hey friends! This past month was busy for our family, and before I write my next article I want to document a few things that happened over the past month. My kids are now out on summer break, and though that creates a bit more chaos I am actually more focused in my work with them home (strange how that works!). Scroll down for an update on our laundry room plans, a family move (not ours!), and pictures of a trial garden tour. We need advice on our laundry room and would love feedback!
A Laundry Room Update
Our laundry room is SMALL and not functional. Currently we have high wire shelves and a washer & dryer on pedestals. This summer I plan to replace the wire shelves with 30” or 40” tall cabinets from IKEA, remove the storage pedestals, and add a countertop over our front load machines for space to fold clothes. For our hanging clothes I plan to add a wall-mounted drying rack in the right corner.
After visiting a few home improvement stores I discovered that IKEA has the biggest range in cabinet sizes and designs. At IKEA the base cabinet cost is one price, but cabinet fronts range quite a bit in price.
My favorite cabinet fronts within our budget are the glossy-turquoise Kallarp and the rustic Askersund. Young House Love recently remodeled their duplex kitchens with each of these cabinet designs (helpful to see the cabinet colors in a room). Comment with which color you like for a laundry room!
I also visited a few stores to look at flooring options. We plan to DIY our laundry room and I can’t live without a washer & dryer for long, so we need an easy-install flooring. These hexagon vinyl tiles caught my eye. OR I am considering painting our vinyl floor, but want to make sure it doesn’t peel over time. If you’ve painted a floor I would love to know if it ended up being a durable finish!
A Family Move
My parents relocated to Greenville, SC a few weeks ago. I was impressed how much our 2 kids and their cousin’s helped with unloading the truck! When we lived in Minnesota we lived 18 hours from family, so living 2 hours from both sets of grandparents feels pretty great.
A few weeks ago my Mom and I visited IKEA to look for sofas for their new place and the Stocksund leather sofa caught our eye. It was priced at $449 but is currently priced at $299. Seems like a great deal and it has a nice design.
A Trial Garden Tour
Last week my mother-in-law and I took a tour of the Metrolina Greenhouse trial garden. Metrolina is the largest single-site heated greenhouse in the US. Their 3-acre trial garden was beautiful and only a few minutes from our home. I am not a gardening expert but I found the colors and textures inspiring! If they open the gardens to the public again next year I definitely recommend a visit.
School is Out!
Summer is an interesting season for me as a WAHM. In some ways the simple schedule is helpful, but it also means my 2 kids will ask me to watch a movie or do nails when I should be working. Some weeks they go to part-time camps like VBS, other weeks I work in the morning while they have screen time…then we do fun activities in the afternoon. My husband also works at home and when he isn’t traveling I try to get to a coffee shop a few times a week to catch up.
So that is our update from May & early July! A lot of fun things going on, and I am ready to move forward with our laundry room project but want to have all the components of it ready before we remove the washer & dryer. Let me know you favorite cabinet door color and if you have thoughts on the flooring!
