a dark grey painted island in SW Peppercorn

New Hardware in the Kitchen

September 11, 2017

Happy Monday, friends! I wanted to share a few updates I've made in the kitchen this past week. We made some decisions about our cabinetry. For now I have decided to keep the cabinets an oak color. I want them professionally painted, but I would rather that money go toward new countertops.

Also! I painted the base of our island dark grey (Sherwin Williams Peppercorn, to match the dining room) over Labor Day weekend! It just took me part of the afternoon and I really like the result.

AND I purchased new stainless steel handles on Amazon and installed them last week. With just those 2 minor changes I can really see a difference in the personality of the space!

The Island

I already owned the paint, tape, and brushes, so that cost me $0. And I was too lazy to go out and buy a drop cloth so I used old sheets. It did take me a few coats to fully cover the beige. I love how the grey pulls in the grey/silver of our dining room chairs, and it accents our new hardware.

small budget updates: replacing the dated kitchen hardware

The hardware

The 25 pack of stainless steel pulls cost just $35!

I had 24 handles to replace, so it worked out beautifully. Only thing I'm frustrated about is that I waited this long to replace the dated 1990s handles! Why did I wait?? I was being a perfectionist and thought maybe we'd overhaul the whole kitchen eventually. But I like these handles and I expect to keep them! They feel very solid and have a good fit/finish to them.

So what is next on the kitchen-update list?

We will order countertops next! I have it narrowed down to 2 off-white options:  LG Hausys Hi-Macs in Kamet (a price class "B" at Home Depot) or Silestone Quartz in White Storm (a price class "A" at Home Depot). If you have an opinion on the durability & style of Quartz vs a Solid Surface I'd love to hear them! I have had several friends warn me that the solid surface sinks stain easily.

Also if you have any kitchen faucet or sink rec's, we will be picking that out soon too!
