Hey friends!! I'm visiting family visit week (and painting kitchen cabinets--more on that here!) But I quickly wanted to share a project my husband and I completed last week.
Remember when I updated my home office? I love the new white curtains, but they aren't super-private. And my office occasionally functions as an extra guest room (I have a sleeper couch on one wall) when family visits. SO I needed a privacy shade for guests. I had purchased a school map from Goodwill for $4.99 a few months back, and hadn't hung it up yet so we decided to upcycle it!
The Install
We first made sure the map overlapped the window, then drew some lines in pencil. He then drilled pilot holes and screwed in two 3" construction lags for the map frame to rest on (one on either side of the window).
The wood window frame surrounding the window helps support the construction lags (vs just installing in drywall.) Easy peasy! The install took less than 30 minutes to complete.
The Result
One of my favorite things about our new map shade, is that it is barely visible when not in use. It rolls up easily and runs parallel to the horizontal edge of the window. In the evening when the map is pulled down and curtains are closed, you can't see anything from the street (we tested it!) So the map works great as an additional privacy shade when guests are staying in the room.
AND its an educational map next to our kids' homework table. Which just makes sense (hopefully my kids will learn their geography better than I did!). Not bad for a $5 fix.
